Walt. Your web page was an interesting find. I notice a reference in the 1841 Census to a Margaret (Cursiter) Wards b. 1806. My g.g.grandmother (Mary Rose Ward b. c 1840 in South Leith, Scotland) was the daughter of James Ward(s) who was b. c 1793 on Sanday. He was one of 5 issue (Elizabeth 1784; James 1793; female 1793; John 1802; and Robert 1804)from the marriage of David Ward(s) Seaman and Margaret Rosie. I don't have the family tree in front of me but will do some checking when I have. The possible connection is interesting and I intend to follow it up. My cousin and our better halves are visiting Sanday from Oz in the second week of September next, and intend to spend a couple of days seeing if we can further our search. Regards Don:)

Oshawa, Ont Canada -

To quickly add to my (extended) earlier guest book entry: John George Hewison was born 5 July 1870, Kirkwall. Son of James S. Hewison and Mary F. Hepburn. Anecdotal: The Fremantle (Western Australia) based Hewison families' "dark looks" (Dark hair and eyes, olive skin) repudetly came from the link of the survivors of the Spanish Armada. Also, John George was an inveterate fisherman; he loved nothing better than to be near the ocean. Any information on his family appreciated.
Bernard O'Hara <
catygail@iinet.net.au>
Perth, WA Australia -

I am Grandson of John George Hewison, who left the Orkneys (Kirkwall) as a cabin boy on a clipper to Australia, in the 1880s. John George died in Fremantle, Western Australia in 1954. After leaving the Orkneys as a teenager it is believed he never saw his family again. The story goes that in his later life he finally wrote a letter back home to his mother, but she had died just a short time before the letter arrived. John George led a very adventurous life up until his late thirties. During this time he worked very hard on the goldfields of Australia. He was a builder of hessian huts, a drover, a camel driver, farmer, horse trainer, tavern owner, and station manager on the Nullarbor Plain. Around 1910 he moved to Fremantle, Western Australia, and worked as a storeman for Lionel Samson and Co. John George was a quiet, kind and gentle man, but he was an exceptionally capable man. He left a strong, positive impression on those who knew him.

I am a bit perplexed after looking at the IGI entries for my family because the dates don't seem right. My grandfather Jonathan Garrioch Kelday was born in Kirkwall. He died in Arbroath in 1975 at the age of about 77, but according to the IGI he was born in 1872, so he should have been 103 when he died. Anyone any ideas?

Also where may I find "The Steel Bonnets" that everyone recommends? I am a descentant of George Linkletter (born in Aug 3, 1737 in Birsay, Orkney). He and his brothers James (b. 1734) and John (b. either 1710 or 1730) and perhaps his parents John Linkletter (he also spelled it Linklater) and Isobell Flett sailed to Conneticut from Scotland. George moved to Prince Edward Island, Canada as Loyalists. I am looking for anyone with information on his brothers John and James who I am guessing stayed in the New York, New Jersey, Conneticut area after the war. James is known to have married Catherin Hardenbrooke (dutch) in New York. Any help in linking my family trees would be helpful. It is a common opinion that most if not all Linkletters (who spelled their name Linkletter not Linklater) in North America are descendants of John & Isobel mentioned above. If you know that you were not I would be interested in hearing from you.

I am most interested in the Kent Family from Eday & Pharay, and all related people. My great-grandfather came to Canada from there, and settled in Perth area, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Thanks for all the work Walt, don't know what we would do without you. Saved me a lot of time at the library....

GREAT SITE. My great-grandfather was Baikie Sinclair born Dec.4 1802 in Orphir. He had a twin sister Frances who married a McKay. Does anyone have any more info on the McKay's or the same Sinclair family?? My great-grandfather came to Canada in 1822 to work for the Hudson Bay Company.

Hello, I am just beginning to trace the Scottish Family Tree of Mr. Hugh David Wilson of Glasgow Scotland. He was born on September 16, 1903, and came to Canada as an adult. Apparently he was orphaned as a young boy, and worked in the mines at age 12. He married a Margaret Nellis Pryce of Dunbarton Scotland, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Walter, Thanks for all the work you do for Orcadian genealogical researchers (including me). I could never access you site using WIN3.1 and Netscape 3.0. It always gave me GPF errors, but now with my new machine I hope to drop by often and enjoy your work. Thanks again from a Canadian Orcadian ;-) Bill

I had not planned on a query, but asking about Mary Arters, and her husband James (William) McCandliss b. 1857 would be appropriate? I have info that says Mary was from Scotland and that she was Ireland - any ideas on researching this?

My grandfather, Alexander Lindsay Spence, lived in Brantford Ontario, Canada. He was born in1896. His father was William Spence (sister - Mary). William's father was named Adam Spence. I believe that both Adam and his son William were born in the Orkney's, although I lose the thread there. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it. Your site is exhaustive and exciting. Thanks for the tour. DSR.
