Correction on Turfus family line. Should be Peter Turfus 1822 m. 1849 Helen Guthrie c1821(not Margaret)child: Mary Ann Turfus 1869. Mary Ann married 1890 Alexander McKinlay-1874 who supposedly lived on "Blackfarm" S. Ronaldsay. Listing does not show any McKinlay or similar name family. They had 7 children, one of which was my mother-in-law who just past away at the age of 96. She was Elizabeth McKinlay born 1903. Siblings were John 1890, Margaret, Alexander 1897, Mary Helen 1901, Barbara Simison 1905 and Edith 1907.

I keep hoping to find information about my g-g-grandfather, ROBERT PETRIE, and his sons JAMES PETRIE b. 1819; ROBERT PETRIE, b. ab 1825 & BREMNER PETRIE, b. ab 1827. His sister, JEANETTE/JANETT B. 1811 was the wife of PETER COOPER, B. 1892 James' wife was JESSIE/JANET GUTHRIE, b. 1819 who had two brothers, WILLIAM GUTHRIE, b. ab 1827 & CHARLES JEFFREY GUTHRIE, b. ab 1836. My information places them in Kirkwall. They were members of the Secession Presbyterian Church and I have come to believe that their membership in a non-conformist church is the reason their names do not appear anywhere. If anyone has information about how to access these church records, I would be most grateful. Julia Colton

I am looking for any relatives of MAGNUS SPENCE b.1826 who married ANN SPENCE ABOUT 1850. Apparently Magnus Spence was the Sabiston Schoolmaster. Magnus and Ann had eight children - Thomas (1850), Ann (1851), Magnus (1853), John (1854), Andrina (185_), Jessie (1858), Hannan (1861), and George Robert (1861). I believe George Robert emigrated to New Zealand. I believe Ann married a FLETT, Magnus married Jemma CRAIGIE, John married Janet McKAY, Andrina married Alex SPENCE and I'm unsure of the others. Have been trying to track down my gr-gr-gr-gr-gr-grandfather, Peter Petrie, who left St. Andrews, Orkney via Port Kirkwall in September 1774 on the ship Marlborough. The ship was bound for Savannah Georgia. So far, I have not been able to locate birth records for Peter who was apparently was born about 1764 and may have lived in the area known as Grotster or Grotsetter. The only birth for that year was for a John Petrie. Anyone have any ideas on how to pursue this? Thanks in advance.

Hi there What an absolutely excellent site! I am currently compiling a family tree for the Orkney Balfours and was very pleased to see the Marriage,Birth and Christening data that you provided. Will you be placing the Deaths information on site as well? It would certainly help me tie up a few loose ends if you did! Keep up the good work. Regards Bill Cowsell

Have seen no reference to Fotheringhame in your guestbook pages - apparantly our family also has something to do with Baikie and Miller - My gg gf Ralph Fotheringhame married Jemima Miller (father Joseph Miller) one of their sons - my g gf Capt James Fotheringhame immigrated to Australia and was joined by his sister Josephine who never married. Would like to contact/have info on Fotheringhame - have a great story written about Miller (who was a capt of a ship in the Napoleonic war) written by Josephine.

So far, with just the very little bit if time which I have spent on your site, I like it, very much. You do, indeed, have a huge amount of names listed here. At least, that is, in the Rich/Ritch section. My only problem with all of them is how do I know just which ones are my ancestors. Maybe there is something that I am overlooking. You see, I am just fairly new at this genealogy stuff and it seems that I am, most always in a state of bewilderment.

Excellent resource this site! I am trying to find out more about my GreatGrandmother's family. Father was Magnus ROBERTSON, he came to NZ in 1874 with his brother(?) Thomas J. from Sandness, Shetland Is. Mother was (probably) Mary TWATT who came to NZ in 1871 with her brother(?) James. My GGma was Mary ROBERTSON born 22 March 1883, apparently in "the old country" and brought out to NZ and adopted. I don't have a birth certificate for Mary jnr. and assume that she was 'adopted' within her own family. Any ideas of help would be gratefully received. Regards Dinah

Just getting started and enjoyed reading your material. My great grandparents were David and Betsy Isbister (nee Kirkness) of Harray, Orkney Islands who were married on March 12, 1857 at Harray. They had seven children and your research has confirmed them to be John Isbister (B: 21Jun1863), (believed to have settled in Vancouver), James Smith Isbister (B: 23Oct1864)(believed to have emigrated to Australia or New Zealand, Helen Isabella Spence Isbister (B: 24Aug1866), Thomas Harray Isbister (B:26Sept1868), David Wood Isbister (B: 23Sept1869) and twins Mary Ann Isbister and my paternal granfather Robert Harvey Isbister (B: 27Nov1871), Robert emigrated to Ontario around 1900, was a great lakes sailor and lived in Wiarton, Ont. dying in 1953. While in Canada his name appears to have been changed to Isbester through error. I am interested in tracing David and Betsy Isbester of Harray back further however have no further identifying data such as dates of birth, parents names, etc. verify my search. If anyone has any info. and can help me same would be appreciated. Thanks. Wayne D. ISBESTER, 18-1990 Wavell Street, London, ON, N5V 4N5 FAX 519-457-2624 or E-mail: ots@ionline.net

My name is Tim Mazzoletti my birth name Wishart. My father John Patrick Wishart was killed in a shark attack at Portsea, Victoria on 4 march 1956. His father, James Michael was born on 4/7/1896 probably in Victoria Australia. He served in the army in ww1 and was wounded in action in France. My great grandfather John Mcmurbie Wishart was born at Williamstown, Victoria on 7/4/1867. (someone in the family says that the middle name is Mc Murtchie but the printout I have seen from the Victorian Registry Office has it as McMurbie.) His father, John was born at Forfar, Scotland on 13/1/1828. He married Hellen (Ellen??)McMenemy at Footscray, Victoria on 8/1/1860. They had the following children: Catherine 1874 Charles Alexander 1870 Emma Glanville 1872 Helen Jane 1865 James Cornelius 1863 My grandfather's siblings were: Margaret Mary (Rita) Arthur Leo (Joe) Mary Kathleen (Min) John Francis My great great grandfather is said to have discovered the site of the town of Port Fairy in Victoria in 1827 while sheltering from a storm at sea. He was a ships master {Fairy}(a sealer or whaler or maybe both) He married Jean Milne at Forfar, Scotland on 5/2/1826. Perhaps this a part of the family in which you have an interest or some knowledge or record. I have some further information about my immediate ancestors, but being new to this sort of research have relied to date pretty much on what others have done. If you want the other stuff I have, or have anything that I might find interesting please email me. My snail mail address is 70 Gilruth Road, Kenmore, Queensland, 4069, Australia

My mother was a 'Wishart' as were my grandparents, descendents of George Wishart and Catherine Houston from the Orkney IS. We are cruising the British Isles for two weeks in Aug. and will be in Kirkwall one day. I am researching my families and am anxious to see the Orkneys. Mom always had an article on George Wishart's death for heresy, saying that we were related. I have not proved or disproved this.

This is a very long shot, but I am stuck in London and wondered if anyone had any information on my Isbister ancestor. According to Catherine Isbister's death certificate in Australia 1856, she was born in London about 1800. Catherine married a Joseph Charles Pe(ar)nman in London in 1822. Catherine's father is given on her death certificate as John a shoemaker. Catherine had a sister Sarah who was also married in London about the same time. Extensive searches both on the IGI and London parish records have failed to find any birth of Catherine Isibister. I imagine it is possible that the family left the Shetland Island well before 1800 which would make it impossible to trace them. Any comments would be gratefully appreciated.

I am trying to trace more of my Muir, Donaldson, and Eunson roots on Orkney. My mother was Isabel Robina Eunson Hamlett, nee Muir of Kirkwall and later Edinburgh. Her sister, Marjorie muir, who never married, presently resides in Edinburgh. My grandfather was James Towrie Muir of Sanday. His father was also James (as were so many other Muirs. I do not know my GGrandmother Muir's name. My grandfather had two brothers that I know of, Jock and Bob, and a sister Lily. Lily married Bob Hay of Sanday and they settled at Kettletoft on Sanday. That is what I know of my Muir relatives. I would appreciate any information which any of you may have. My maternal grandmother was Isabella Tomlinson Muir, nee Donaldson. She was born in 1886 at Vedder, Tankerness. Her parents were John Donaldson and ? Eunson. (Don't know my GGrandmother's first name.) My Grandmother was the youngest of her family. She had three brothers, Jimmie and Johnnie who were twins, and Willie. Jimmie married Mary Ann Cooperof Cott of Holland, Tankerness, in Jan. 1911. They had two children that I know of, Maisie and Sara. Johnnie married Agnes Wilson of Kirkwall and moved to Canada. Willie married Maggie Eunson of Grimster. They had three children that I know of, Billy, Minnie, and George. My Grandmother also had three sisters, Barbara the oldest, Sarah and Maggie. Barbara married Robert Eunson of Grimster in Dec of 1896. They and five children I believe, Daisy, Nannie, Bobbie, Andrew and a child unknown to me. Sarah married Peter Brass in 1895 and had nine children according to my records but I know none of the names. Maggie married Willie Bews of Swartabreck in 1904 and they had 7? children: William, Jim, John, Bella David Robert Heddle, and a child unknown. That is my Grandmother's family. My GGrandfather, John Donaldson was the son of Wemyss Bakie Donaldson and Mary Eunson. In addition to my GGrandfather, who was the oldest, Wemyss and Mary had five children. Mary who married Samuel Petrie, Maggie, Jessie, Robbie who married Betsy Budge and Johnnie who married Betsy's sister Maggie. Weymss was the youngest child of John Donaldson and Isabel Peace. He had 3 brothers, John, c. 8 Jan, 1812; James Bakie c. 11 Jan, 1815; and Thomas, c. 8 June, 1817; and one sister, Margaret, c. 7 January 1820. Wemyss' wife, Mary, from what I can decipher, was the middle child of James Eunson and Annie Dishan. Mary's older brother James was born 19, Aug. 1820. Her younger sister Jessie, was born 11 August, 1823. That is as far as I have been able to trace back through the Donaldsons. My GGrandfather's wife, ? Eunson was the daughter of William Eunson and ? Miller. My GGrandmother had four brothers, James who had no children; William who married Isabella Tomlinson (I believe they had no children); David who moved to Adelaide, Australia (he married and I believe Bella was his youngest); and Johnnie. My GGGrandfather, William was the son of ? Eunson and Kirsty (Christine) Allan. My GGGrandmother, ? Miller was the daughter of John Miller and Sally Scott, both of Stronsay. My GGGrandmother's parents and her brothers all moved to Australia. I put this out for anyone's use and to welcome any information about the blanks and ? in my family tree. I would also like to thank Mr. Cursiter for starting and maintaining this website. Happy hunting!

Would like to know more about the origin of the surname, what it means, etc. Has anyone else encountered Cherokee ancestry associated with the MODEs? My great great grandmother was Mary Jane Mode? who was supposed to be full blooded Cherokee. She had a son, John Thomas Mode, who either took her name or his fathers name. Not sure if he was born out of wedlock. She was born ca. 1848 and he was born in 1867, both likely born in Western NC. Any information will be appreciated

Winnipeg, MB Canada -

I have followed your page development for sometime now. I will add my bit to the family line as I have been able to find out. My connection is from John Corrigal of Harray. He had (?)4 sons; John, Peter, Jacob & James. These 4 emigrated to the Red River Settlement around 1800 - 1810. I belive that John was the HBC Factor until ~1840. James (born 1795, Orkney)is my great-great-grandfather. He married Catherine Flett, the daughter of William Flett, of Harray, Orkney at Red River and Betsy, a Cree woman. Catherine is recorded in the "Book of the First Metis Nation". James and Catherine had 15 children, one of whom was Henry Corrigal. He had 10 Children, one of who was Lovern (Barney) Corrigal, whom had 6 children, one of whom was Ken Corrigal, my father. I have not been able to trace further the family back from John Corrigal, in the islands. Any help or suggestions would be helpful. The first recorded Corrigal in the Orkney Islands was Magnus Corrigal, 1489. It appears that the original Norse spelling was "Kaarijdel", comprised of two parts; "Kaari" a man's first name and pronouced "Korey" and "jdel" meaning ravine, pronounced "gill". This is consistant with Norwegian Norse surnames taken from places. That's all for now. See you again

The family lived in Shapinsay for many years where the eight youngest children were born. Peter, junior, is believed to have emigrated to the United States during the early 1880s. Peter, senior, and Ann, returned to Stronsay before 1891, and died there. I plan to spend five in Orkney [20-25 August] and will visit Kirkwall, Egilsay, Orphir & Shapinsay. If anyone would like me to take a photograph of an ancestor's home, etc., please send me the details and I will do my best to meet their request. However, it is most important that I receive the message BEFORE 10 August as my e-mail address is due to be changed the following day. My own folks were mainly connected with the parishes of Orphir & Shapinsay.
