I'm just starting on my family journey!!! I have always been told that I was related to the Earl of Unst - as to when, I don't know though My great grandmother was born Jessie Grace Spence in Unst who later married James Hogg (from Aberdeen) in Australia. I am really looking forward to getting "hooked" on all this and maybe finding some relations to correspond with. Thankyou for the site and HAPPY NEW YEAR

I was at a funeral yesterday of my uncle Ivan Murray Sebastian, 'Bub". A warm and well loved man. My cousin gave me some detials of the family tree and mentioned the spelling went from "Sabston" to "Sabiston" and eventually to "Sebastian". This all stated with a journey from The Oarkney Is. in the 1800's. My father Jeffery Graham Sebastian of Wodonga, Victoria, Australia, married Frances Mary Hicks of Mt Pleasant SA, Australia and moved to Canberra ACT Australia in 1959. In 1960 my sister Judith Claire Sebastian ws born and then me, Grant William Sebastian in 1966. The story that my cousin tells is close the the story of "Alexander Sabiston whose son William emigrated to Australia". Is there any light you may be able to shed on this story or could you please relate you family history to me.

The Orkney Family History Society was formed in 1997 and is run by a committee of volunteers. We lease a small office which holds our library etc and is available for members to do their research. The office is staffed by volunteers and is open to visitors and members during set hours or by arrangement. Our library, although small at the moment, holds a variety of information, most of which has been donated from members. Information includes :
The IGI for Orkney, on microfiche. The Old Parish Records, on microfilm. The Census Returns, on microfilm and transcribed onto a computer database Family Trees. Emigration and Debtors lists. Letters, Articles and Stories concerning Orcadians. Hudson Bay Company information. Graveyard surveys ( this is a long term project ). It is our aim to record as much of this as possible on a database to facilitate research. Locally we have monthly Members Evenings with a guest speaker. We produce a newsletter 4 times a year, which is posted out, to all our members, and we also have a booklet of our members and their interests to allow members with similar interests to correspond with each other. We can usually undertake to do research for our members who live outwith Orkney, but this is dependent on the willingness of our island members giving up their spare time to help. We also have a member who is willing to do research for members in the Library archives. We do not charge members for our research. Genealogy is a rewarding and absorbing subject which requires a great deal of time and patience. Many of our members have been studying their family histories for many years, while others have only just started. All enjoy the detective work, especially when they pull out those surprises! So, if you have any family links and / or subject interests in the Orkney Isles and wish to join please contact me and I will e-mail you an application form George Gray, Orkney Family History Society E-mail address: george.gray@unisonfree.net The address for the Society is : Orkney Family History Society, Strynd Community Room, The Strynd, Kirkwall, Orkney, KW15 1HG, Scotland, UK. My GGGrandfather was William Flett, married Margaret Laughton in Shapinsay 1796. Their son Peter [one of 9 children] was my Great Grandfather, He was born 16/1/1803. He married Mary Gaudie. They had 4 children.. John, Peter, James Laughton and Catharine. My Grandfather was James Laughton Flett. He was born 26/10/1836 Firth and Stenness. James came to Australia in Sept 1867 on the ship "BERAR" and I believe his brother Peter came too but went on to New Zealand. Hi folks my name is Karan Craigie and I have just begun the search for my ancestors.Unfortunately I don,t have an awful lot of information but here goes anyways. My father, John Robert Craigie (now deceased)was born in Lerwick,Shetlands.I can,t be sure of the date but it could be around the late 1920,s.He had a sister called "Lizzie" or Elizabeth, another called Mina(or spelled something like that)and brothers, one of which was called David.I am the only child to my fathers second marriage, but I also know that there are four to his first marriage two of which are Allan and Elizabeth (who now lives in Canada).I have no idea what my fathers parents names were or if I have relatives still residing in the Shetlands. If anyone could give me any information on any of my relatives or ancestors it would be much appreciated.Thanks.

Dear Mr. Custer, I was interested to read some of your extensive work on the Cursiter and Turfus families. I grew up next to the farm of Cursiter in the parish of Firth in Orkney. This farm was reputed by some local lore to be the origin of the famous General Custer who fought the indians at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. I was never sure of the veracity of that claim. I am more certain that the noted Scottish artist Stanley Cursiter believed that his family came from the farm. He is buried in the local Firth cemetery. You might also be interested to know that one of the Kirwall shoe shops was run by the Turfus family. The widow of the man who I believe was the last remaining Turfus proprietor lived down the road from me in Finstown. I hope this is of interest. Regards, Magnus Grimond.

A very interesting website which provides a great start for anyone interested in their origins. I was born in Trinidad, West Indies on 7/10/1943 the first son of Thomas Ross Groundwater [born 30/4/1916]and Ruth Thavenot. My father was the second son of Alexander Groundwater and Christina Connon [Alexander was the first child, Olive the third and Christian the fourth and last]. Thomas Flett Groundwater (who was a ship's Master and was lost with his ship [the Balmore] and crew off Cape Horn in 1907) was his father and my great grandfather. I am not sure which of the Thomas Flett Groundwaters in you website is my great grandfather but I am guessing it was the one born in 1849. When I get the time I will do some research. I have always understood that the name originates from Orkney and is Viking in origin where settlers [raiders?] from Norway[?] characteristically took their name from the shallow bay [Scapa?] where they landed [hence the Groundwater hills just inland on the mainland of Orkney]. I was led to believe that 'grund waten' or something like it means 'shallow bay' in Norse or Norwegian. Best wishes. Nigel Groundwater

My grandfather James was born in Knockally Dunbeath on March 20, 1882. His mother was Isabella Louttit born April 9, 1860, I can go a few generations back on Isabella's side but have been able to find nothing about my Grandfather's father. Any help would hbe welcome. Isabella's parents were John Louttit (born Jan 9, 1823 in Latheron, and Margaret Sutherland born April 9, 1825 in Latheron. I note the unlikelihood that both Isabella and her mother could have been born on the same date 35 years apart so one or the other of these dates may be in error. Any help figuring out who my grandfather's father was would be most appreciated. Greeting from sunny southern California.

A good starting point! My mother's name was Christina Taylor Bews; she was born in either Stenness or Stromness on September 9th,1909. She had numerous brothers and sisters among them JOCK and Isabella. My mother's mother was married previously and the name Flett rings a bell but then name fathers and mothers were commonly used then. I'D love to hear from any family member who can tell me more about my family roots as I have 2 children. I had 2 brothers but David died in 1987 at 40 though Alan is now 53. Monica was born in 1980 and John in 1981. Mum left Orkney at 18 to train as a nurse and in 1945 she married Ivor Ewins. As my family dwindle the more I need to find out about my heritage and I'm proud to have Orkadian roots.

Wonderful website! Wish there were more. Does anyone have info on John William Bews born Dec 16, 1884 in Kirkwall? He married Williamina E. C. McKay Dec 12, 1912, possibly in Scotland. He was president of the University in Pietermaritzburg. Also info on his sister, Elizabeth, born in Orkney (Kirkwall). She had a son, Peter Bews, born before she was married and he was married twice. He had a son, Edgar Bews (by his first marriage) who came to Canada and lived in Calgary, AB, where he died in 1985 at the age of 65. Elizabeth was later married to a Cooke or Cook. No other details. John and Elizabeth's ancestors were Hay, Villian, Copland, Moss, Sinclair, Stove, Dearness, Skea, Turfus and Angus. Elizabeth's birth is listed on the Cursiter website, but not John's. I believe the records only go as far as 1881. Am I correct? Thank you for your reply to my E-mail, Walt Custer. I've been really busy filling in the missing dates. Up date of previous query: I'm looking for the descendents of John Philp(b:1815) who married Margaret Spence(b:1811) in 1839, Birsay, Orkney Islands. They had eight kids, and were living at a place called Newbigging, and a place called Skedge, Birsay, Orkney Islands. The kids that I have traced are: (all births and marriages are in Birsay, Orkney Islands) Helen Philp(b:1840)married Peter Johnston in 1863. William Philp(b:1842),moved to Canada in 1862 as an employee of the HBC, it was at this time he chagned his name to "Phillips". Wiliam married Charlotte Lambert in 1866 at Fort Pelly and they had eleven kids. Their kids were Jack, Margaret she married Joe Kirkness, Nellie married Charlie Eden, Jemima married Albert Settee, Catherine married Willie Taylor, Archibald, Annie married Malcolm McRae, Joseph, Alex or Tom, Christine married Perk Pearson. Isabel Kirkness Philp(b:1849) moved to Canada, I don't think she ever married. John Spence Philp(b:1846), status unknown Margaret Taylor Philp(1844), Status unknown Mary Spence Philp(b:1848), married Thomas Philp in 1871 Jean Moar Philp(b;1851), married William Harper in 1875 Jamina Philp(b:1855), status unknown If there were other childern, unknown. I'm trying to find out what happened to John and Margaret and the rest of the family? I have found out that Helen was living with her uncle and aunt in 1851. So something must have happened to her family. (John Philp's parents were: William Philp (b:1778) and Jean Folster(b:1780) and they were married in 1807) (Margaret Spence's parents were: William Spence and Hannah Mowat) William's parents were, George Philp(1749) and Catherine Taylor(1753) and they married 1775 So any information will be most welcomed.

Captain Colin Robertson Sinclair, born Oxford House, Keewatin, August12, 1816, died July 22, 1901. (This is now Oxford House, Manitoba, Canada) Father: Willaim Sinclair Mother: Margaret Nahovway Sinclair On his tombstone in St. Johns Cemetery in Winnipeg reads: "Sacred To the memory Of my mother Margaret Nahovway Sinclair This last token of love and affection is erected by her wandering boy, Colin, 1897" On the back of the monument is written: "Eyes of my childhood days shall meet me, lips of a mothers love shall greet me, on the day I follow. Oh, what hosts of memories rise, sadness dims an old mans eyes" Colin was sent to Scotland to get educated at a very young age and never saw is mother again, in his old age he came looking for her but she had died approximately 10 years before. So he erected the momunment for her. When he died he requested that he be buried in the same grave and it was requested. Relations are in San Francisco and Oxford House, Manitoba. Archie

I believe I have the last remaining Sinclair family originating from the, "Quoys", in HOLM, which left the Sinclair family in 1951/52. Grandmother, nee, Mary Alexander Morrison, originated, I believe in Kirkwall. The last Sinclair to live in the, "Quoys, was Peter who died just before the sale to the neighbouring, "Gorn's".

Great site,I've visited several times. My gggrandparents were William Traill and Henrietta Moodie Heddle.I've found several references to their marriage and children but nothing further on Henrietta Moodie Heddle.Any info on her birth and parentage would be greatly appreciated. The only reference I have is from notes my GGranfather,Frederick Traill made in our copy of "The Genealogy of the Orkney Traills" where he blames "Moodies daughter" for bringing consumption into the family by marrying "rich Robert Heddle" (not a very complimentary comment)

I have posted numerous old photos on my Photobox webpage in the hope that someone may be able to identify who the people are. The photos were all connected to my family and must include individuals from the Wisharts of Orphir, Harcuses of Eday, Patersons and Reids and Groats of Westray, Smiths and Spences from Tankerness and probably many other families. Some of the photos were taken in South Sheilds, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Toronto, Oregon and other places and must be from family who emigrated from Orkney. Maybe the photos include readers' family? I will be putting more of the photos on the website in due course. If anyone can help identify the people or events I would be grateful for any information and if they would like an emailed copy of any of the photos please let me know. I have just become interested in my family tree and my mother's maiden name was Stenhouse. Her father was called Leonard and he had a brother called William but unfortunately, I know little more except I believe they originated from Hoy/Hoick? My mother's mother had the surname of Barnaby and I believe she married Leonard Stenhouse on Christmas Day in or about 1913 They had 7 children to my knowledge: William, Mary, John, Eliza, Evelyn, Nora (my mother) and Leonard. Mary and John died in infancy, I believe. All 7 children were born in Hull to my knowledge. This was a very old fashioned family and were all baptised possibly Catholic. My maternal grandmother had the forenames of Alice Maud. I look forward to hearing from you if any of this is of any interest to you. I would appreciate any assistance you could give me as to the best websites to use in my search as my father's surname is Gibson which is very common. Thank you Pat

Our family just recently came into possession of some old photographs and letters connected to the Gibson, Heddle, Cowper and Ward families from Kirkwall. An interesting start in researching the family tree - Elizabeth Heddle and William Gibson emigrated to Canada in the 1860's and settled in Brigden, Ontario. This isn't a query at this time. I hope to visit your website to gain more detail in the future.

John Tait came to Canada with two brothers. The other siblings were: ANN INKSTER TAIT, b. 1873, ISABELLA IRVINE TAIT, b. 1868. I'm uncertain of who the third remaining sibling might be. Their parents were WILLIAM TAIT and ISABELLA GUNN. Thanks. :)

Sorry But; I have much, much more verified info on the WILLIAMSON history beginning in the USA. This is a new venture for me and it,s hard for me to ask the right questions.? This is from "WILLIAMSON & LUCK FAMLIES" written by:J.William Austin II and Rebecca H.R. Austin THE WILLIAMSON FAMILY Descendants of Thomas Williamson Where Thomas came from, we are uncertain; there were at least three early WILLIAMSON famlies, who used the name Thomas: One Thomas settled on the Isthmus or neck of land called "Crany Point", his 50 acres were called "Crany Island"...this first Thomas landed in 1649.There were also a James WILLIAMSON in Rappahannock County, and a John WILLIAMSON in lower Norfolk County in 1640. We cannot find a complete list of the children of Thomas, but circumstantial evidence of later transactions of land in Betford County of the property which was owned by the WILLIAMSONS along Otter and Camp creeks indicate possibly two sons, John and James Sr.and a daughter Elizabeth. Thomas must have been born between 1700 and 1715. I am trying to find Thomas'father and trace our family back to our Scottish Roots. PLEASE HELP!

(3)JOHN BENNETT RUSSELL, born 7 February, 1851, Dumbarton, son of John Russell and Margaret Bennett. John, junior, a photographer, had a studio in Kirkwall from 1873 to circa 1889, when he moved to Grantown-on-Spey. In addition to information about this man, I would be most interested to hear from anyone who has a photograph(s)taken by him at his King Street, Kirkwall or Traill Street, Thurso, studios. A short article commemorating the 150th anniversary of his birth was published in THE ORCADIAN newspaper,1 February, 2001.

The Orkney Family History Society this week for the first time has 500 paid up members. We intend to make up a new Directory of Member's Names and Interests to go out with our next magazine which will go out in early April. We recently asked members who had not handed in a family tree to forward one and this has resulted in a great many family trees arriving from all over the world. I am sending this to remind all the people who have asked me for application forms to join the Society to return the form with payment and a family tree if they wish to have their interests recorded in our next directory. If you require another form please contact me and I will send one by e-mail. George R. Gray, Orkney Family History Society, Kirkwall,Orkney, UK.

I'm looking for relatives of this family. PHILLIPS or PHILP ggg/grandfather, John Philp married Margaret Spence in 1839, I believe at a place called, Newbigging, Birsay, Orkney Island, they 6 kids. I know of three, there are William Philp(b:1842), Isobel Kirkness Philp(b:1849), John Spence Philp(b:1846), the others I don't know. William started working for HBC, in 1862 and he came to Canada, He seemed to change his name at this time to "PHILLIPS", not sure if the others did also. Willain married a "metis woman" at Fort Ellice in 1866, her name was Charlotte Lambert. They had eleven kids: Tom, Katie, Jemima, Joe, Jack, Bill, Margaret, Archie, Anne, Christy and Nellie. Please email me if you are related Regards Archie Phillips

I wonder, if you have the exact date of birth for: Nathaniel Johnston? You have him listed as born in 1854; and his parents you have listed as orginating: "...of Thorshauer North Farae, Orkney, Scotland". I think he may actually be from: Thorshaven, Faroe Islands. If you give me his date of birth, I can find out from here. In advance: Thank you very much for your help.
