I am looking for any information on a typical Christmas Eve and Day in Northern New Brunswick, around 1915. Any grandparents memories you could share? Also any detailed info on logging in the Madawaska Valley around 1925? Thanks from a Fredericton born girl. Carolyn <cweed@owt.com> Richland , WA USA - Saturday, December 30, 2000 at 14:59:32 (EST

I realize that the records you have so kindly provided are from the LDS (Mormon) records. THERE ARE OMISSIONS: my notes come directly from the microfilmed census records in Kirkwall. I love this site and visit it often. It is one of the first places I surfed to when I first got my computer on line. And I wish to thank everybody who helped to steer me in the right direction, to quit searching for Averlady when in fact it is Aberlady I needed to investigate. It has helped immensly, and thanks not only to the people who read this site, but those on other sites who have steered me, and continue to, in the right direction. I'm not there yet -- it does take time to trace ancestry with skethcy information, but I have found out that not only my g. grandfather David Spence MOWAT but other members of his family emigrated to Canada and Victoria. It now feels like I'm coming home when I return to Cursiter. Marilyn Mowat <mannmow@home.com> Victoria, B.C. Canada - Tuesday, December 26, 2000 at 22:38:08 (EST)

This is the most informative site I have found for information on the Orkney Islands.I am researching my ggg grandfather, George Robertson of Orphir, Orkney Islands. He came to Canada sometime in the early 1790's on the sloop "Beaver" and worked for the Hudson Bay Company at York Factory. He married a native woman and eventually moved to the Red River Settlement in present day Manitoba. He is listed in the Red River Settlement census of May 1827 as being 60 years of age at that time. I would be most grateful if anyone could give me any information on who his parents were and if he had any siblings. Just found your wonderful site. Found my Great, greatgrandmother, Rachel Ridley or Ridlon, b. 28 Sep 1801 in Saco, Maine in a tree on ancestry.com. Her Grandfather is listed as Magnus Redland, b. 1698, Shetland, Scotland Stromness, Orkney Islands. It lists his father as Thomas and his father as John. From your records it appears that Magnus, c 6 Sep 1674, may be Rachel's Great Grandfather. I have done no personal research myself, but plan to e-mail the submitter of the tree to ancestry.com to see what his resources were. Any insights? Also, Barbara Laughton or Laughtane? I see it recorded both ways. What do you feel is correct? Thanks for all your hard work. I have been researching Dishington family in the Orkneys for some years, and am trying to find a probate record after a minister Andrew Dishington from Kirkwall, whos son John was served as heir in 1644. The referance to this date is "Fasti", I am not certain what this means. An advice on how to determine if there exists a probate record, and how to access the information in it, would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Petter F. Vennemoe Petter F. The Orkney Family History Society was formed in 1997 and is run by a committee of volunteers. We lease a small office which holds our library etc and is available for members to do their research. The office is staffed by volunteers and is open to visitors and members during set hours or by arrangement. Our library, although small at the moment, holds a variety of information, most of which has been donated from members. Information includes : The IGI for Orkney, on microfiche. The Old Parish Records, on microfilm. The Census Returns, on microfilm and transcribed onto a computer database Family Trees. Emigration and Debtors lists. Letters, Articles and Stories concerning Orcadians. Hudson Bay Company information. Graveyard surveys ( this is a long term project ). It is our aim to record as much of this as possible on a database to facilitate research. Locally we have monthly Members Evenings with a guest speaker. We produce a newsletter 4 times a year, which is posted out, to all our members, and we also have a booklet of our members and their interests to allow members with similar interests to correspond with each other. We can usually undertake to do research for our members who live outwith Orkney, but this is dependent on the willingness of our island members giving up their spare time to help. We also have a member who is willing to do research for members in the Library archives. We do not charge members for our research. Genealogy is a rewarding and absorbing subject which requires a great deal of time and patience. Many of our members have been studying their family histories for many years, while others have only just started. All enjoy the detective work, especially when they pull out those surprises! So, if you have any family links and / or subject interests in the Orkney Isles and wish to join please contact me and I will e-mail you an application form George Gray, Orkney Family History Society E-mail address: george.gray@unisonfree.net The address for the Society is : Orkney Family History Society, Strynd Community Room, The Strynd, Kirkwall, Orkney, KW15 1HG, Scotland, UK. Looking to find information about the family of Edward Reeder and Christiana Mowat who according to an LDS IGI Marriage Record married on 8 November 1815 at Stromness, Orkney, Scotland. My great great grandparents were Edward Reeder and Helen Houston who in 1875 lived at 18 Belgrave St (now Beltane St), Glasgow, Scotland. My assumption is that there is an Orkney connection with the Reeder and Mowat family, hence my reasons for seeking further information. I would appreciate if there is anyone with further information, or advice, that will help me trace my forebears in these areas. Many thanks, George Cochrane. I thought some people might be interested in the following: ("Orkney Roots" article in "The South Australian Genealogist",Oct.1988 by A.A.McCullum of Stromness)...the only Orcadian convict transported to Australia was William SINCLAIR,postmaster of Stromness in 1851.He was "charged with 7 counts of embezzling and secreting letters with the purpose of stealing the postage money" Other names in the article were: James Lanskaill,c/- of Thomas Brown in St John's New Brunswick; John Louttit, sailor c/- S. Hume,Buffalo,America;Wm. Croy, mason;Thomas Stanger, shoemaker in Port Adelaide and John Rendall, seaman on board "Hudson",an American ship,in Gibraltar. All presumably were Orcadians awaiting letters from home!Today we'd blame our country's inefficient postal service.(Last week we received a post-card posted in Rome ,from our dau.,which took over 3 months to reach us!!!,so did her sister and her in-laws!!!) Wm SINCLAIR was convicted and sentenced to 7 yrs transportation. The amount stolen was apprx. 1-2 pounds. The then minister spoke of his good character as well as 10 yrs honest service in the Stromness P.O. Well here goes. I am looking for my cousins in New Zealand. Just after ww2 my uncle, my fathers' brother, came out of the Royal Medical Corps he was a doctor/surgeon. He did not like socialised medicine so the family went to New Zealand where he practiced medicine, his wifes' name was Gracie. I know they have passed on but their children are there somewhere. The oldest son worked for the diplomatic corps there. The father would have been known as Dr James Sutherland. Wee spelling mistake in my last message. It should have said "She sang vocals ...." Craig Hunter USA - Friday, May 26, 2000 at 17:42:35 (EDT)

I came across this site when I was checking out all my "favourites" URLs on my PC. One site lead to another and I came across this. I knew a Maureen Cursitor briefly (too briefly) away back in late 1980s. I sand backing vocals for one of my demo songs (I had actually written it for her). She was my partner at a friends wedding and she came out to Whitburn to do the song. She is a tremendous singer and she is a brilliant guitarist (she told me she sang at the local pubs in the area). She came from Stromness and at the time was a "trolly dolly" on a small airline. Looking at the births.txt file the only one which seems relevent is Maureen Ann who was born on 6th May 1963. According to that page it said she was single (hard to believe as she was a cracker). I am still doing music but if I win the lottery and build a big studio I would get her down again to do vocals. She was some girl. Craig Hunter <craig@pottishaw.freeserve.co.uk> Whitburn, Scotland - Friday, May 26, 2000 at 17:40:14 (EDT)

Hello.. I have recently started to help a friend search for his family tree in Orkney. I discovered, although they came from Ireland as Nolan, the name changed to Newlands/Noulan(s) by the time they reached Orkney. They were tinkers, and the first born sons were nearly always called Isaac, as was my friend's father. I just heard there is an Isaac Newlands Cup in connection with the local football! Do you have any knowledge of John Stewart who lived around 1550 in Shetland and married Dorthe Trondsen, daughter of the Norwegian admiral Christoffer Trondsen. Some sources sais this John was a son of king James V. But I have noted that Lord John Stewart, son of James V and half sister of Maria Stuart, was married to Lady Janet Hepburn in 1562. Janet Hepburn was a sister of Botwell. Dorthe Throndsen was a sister of Anna Trondsen, Botwell's mistress. An answer will be appreciated. Christoffer Trondsen is my most interesting relative so far. I am a Gr.Gr.Gr. Grandson of Jacob Corrigal(1772-1844), of Birsey or Kirkwell, who served the HBC for 50 years in the Albany District, first as an Inland Trader and finally as a commissioned officer and Chief Trader. His "spouse" was an Ojibway, "Mary" (1788-1823), who died at age 35 and was buried at the Old Marten Falls Post (Indian Reserve). (The reserve was later moved to Ogoki, 50 miles down river). One of their two son-in-laws was Robert Scollie(1799-1888)of Westray, Orkney, who married Mary Corrigal (1811-1862), my Gr.Gr. Grandparents, while in the service of the HBC. They homesteaded, later, in Otonabee Township, of Peterborough County. Only one other daughter-- of the original five daughters and one son,(William)-- ever married; namely, Anne Corrigal(1802- )who married William Nourse, also a commissioned officer with the HBC. The remaining three daughter and the son--all unmarried-- are buried with their father, Jacob Corrigal, in a crypt in the east churchyard of St. Peters Anglican Church in Cobourg, Ontario, Canada. (I have twice visited Orkney and met William and Mary Scollie of Kirkwell, and also a widow of the Corrigal clan at Kirkwell)./dmf Fowler, C. Maiden name Sinclair Irma Walter <hirwalter@telstraeasymail.com.au> Bunbury, W.A. Australia - Friday, March 31, 2000 at 03:17:45 (EST)

Hi Walt; Thanks for this great site. I'm a rank amateur, both at genealogy, and computer use. I'm the great nephew of John Copland, a Kirkwall housepainter, and William Copland, who relocated to Glasgow to become a police constable. Through the very kind help of Norman Sinclair of Kirkwall, I located a previously unknown second cousin, Pat Terry of Glasgow, who supplied me with the names of 4 great aunts, and another great uncle that I had never known existed. Norman kindly researched Copland records from the parish of Harray, and I have some idea of some of the family. The great aunt's married names were: Jesse Graham, Mary Campbell, Edith Brooks, Maggie Harvey, and the other brother was James who died in 1906, a bachelor. I don't think Pat is on-line, and I haven't heard back from her since my Christmas card. I think Pat mentioned that at least some of the other cousins may have immigrated to Australia and moved to England, etc. I saw lots of Coplands listed in the genealogy, and I think I'm probably back 4 generations. Are there any Coplands or relations out there ? I'd appreciate hearing from you. Duncan K. Copland <dkcopland@prodigy.net> Austin, TX USA - Thursday, March 30, 2000 at 22:04:35 (EST)

Greetings from Winnipeg. You have a commendable web-site. I have been searching for my ancestors on my father's (Jerry Alan Sanderson)side for many years and I stumbled upon the website of Serena Willis http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/w/i/l/Serena-L-Willis. I moved Winnipeg, Manitoba recently and became reacquainted with a cousin, Ruth Stoyka (nee MOAR). Ruth was a wealth of current information on my family and was able to give me the name of my Great-grandparents: Robert James Sanderson > and Catherine Ann Letandre! Up until this year, all I knew was my grandfathers name. I have been using the Family Tree Maker program and web site for many years. plugging in names here and there, but getting meager results. On a whim, I input my great grandfather's name and up came Serena's sight. I quickly located my Great, Great parents Robert Sanderson and Elizabeth Sabiston.and all the way to my 5xGreat grandparents: Robert Sandison and Marbell Isbister. Using another search for Robert, brought me to your site. Thank you. Although I found some slight irregularities ie. I am unsure whether or not Marbell was a NA Native woman. I have further information on that branch of the tree if you are interested and would be more than pleased to share it with you. Thank again for people like you. I have really enjoyed beginning to search this site. I am not very likely to be able to travel beyond Australia, so would appreciate information, stories, etc about my Orkney ancestors. Family names I would like more information on include: Grieve, Loutitt (or Lightfoot???),Work, Flett. .......My great grandmother was Mary Grieve who was born on the "John Bunyan" in the 1850's enroute to Australia. Looking for information re: Thomas G. Anderson (my grandfather) who was born on one of the Orkneys (I'm not sure which). His mother (my great grandmother) was infatuated with the Italian Romance novels of her day and consequently gave each of her sons an Italian middle name. Thomas Guiseppi Anderson married Alice Bissell and had three daughters Ruby,Alice (my mother) and Eileen. Grandfather served in the HLI and saw duty in India and the Boer War where he was Baden Powell's colour sergeant.
