Great site - can I ask a question regarding Orcadian marriages in the 1800s? Does anyone know the 'protocol' concerning marriages in the late 1800s, where the woman had previously produced illegitimate children BUT the man she wanted to marry was NOT the father of her offspring? As the Church would still have a great influence on weddings I wondered if she would have been allowed to marry? Or was there a Registry Office in Orkney at that time? Anyone know? I’m interested as I have an ancestor who moved to and married in Glasgow (her children being brought up by their grandmother back in Orkney). She married a ‘new’ man in her life & stated “widow” on her marriage certificate. I will never know if this was a means to enable her to marry or what she told her new husband..... Anyone with similar in their lineage? Has anyone traced an anonymous male ancestor thru' Church records or Sherriff Court Records? Many thanks for this chance to put this on your message board. Hi and thanks very much! Just found this terrific site, I have been searching through the census and got sidetracked with my "Rose" Scott being listed as a female "seamstress" when in actual fact he was a male "seaman" (human error transcribing no doubt)! But, his birth record is on your site along with his dad William and mum Catherine, wish I'd found this site last week, I notice other names that I am also connected to ie Allan. Thanks thanks thanks, you are terrific. When I have more time I will go through your site, I am sure to find out more! I didn't even know that my grandfather's family were from the Orkney's. I might now be able to track down some of the history, I would love to know why someone would call thier son "Rose". I will definitely be visiting the Orkney's on my next trip! Linda Linda Clynk <

I am looking in the time frame of about 1858 forward. Reason being is that John and Elizabeth married in 1858. Please contact me if you have any information. Thank you very much. Maura Marik Wane <

Sad News for The Orkney Family History Society Last night at the monthly meeting of the Orkney Family History Society those present were shocked to hear of the sudden death of one of our most enthusiastic committee members and research secretary, Janice Sinclair. A tribute was paid to Janice and a minutes silence was observed. She will be a great loss to her family and to the various groups that she helped especially our own society. . She had been looking forward to the talk on the Hudson's Bay Company so very much. The speaker, Phil Astley, dedicated the talk to Janice. Janice died suddenly at her home yesterday morning. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I thought all members of the Society who had met or corresponded with Janice should know as soon as possible. From Nan Scott, Chairman and George R. Gray, Treasurer, Orkney Family History Society George R. Gray <

I am chairing a committee through the Lower Fort Garry Volunteer Association, in conjunction with Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site, to help celebrate the Site's 175 anniversary in the year 2005. The goal of this HBC Descendants 2005 Reunion Committee is to research, locate and find descendants of employees of the HBC who settled in the Red River Settlement prior to and after the amalgamation. Employees who worked specifically at Lower Fort Garry are also included in our search. There are numerous activities tentatively planned for this reunion, scheduled for summer of 2005. If you are a descendant of any of the above, please let me know so we can record this information. thanks. Sunday, March 10, 2002. Barbara Gessner <

My family traces in the USA to a William Haddel (Heddle or Haddle) married to Polly in Maryland USA about 1800. Their family history was transcribed as an oral history, but we believe they came as indentured servants to the colonies. There are lots of haddles in the USA in MD, VA, SC, Penna and Georgia! Would trade for free our extensive family history to anyone else with same name and other Canadain, British or Australian family lines! Hi. I am looking for information on a Johnston (or Johnson /Johnstone) family, believed to be from the Orkneys at approx 1900 - 1920ish. The family had around 12 children, the only two names I have are Olo (Oliver?) and Isobella. Isobella would have been born in the 1920's moved to the Dundee area and was a cook at Glamis Castle. She married a William Williamson lived in Arbroath and had three children of her own. I realise that the information is a bit sketchy to a a starting point would be great. Thanks for any help. Tony <

They had eight kids, and they lived at Newbigging, and a place called Skedge, Birsay, Orkney Islands. The kids that I have traced are: (all births and marriages are in Birsay, Orkney Islands) Helen Philp(b:1840)married Peter Johnston in 1863. William Philp(b:1842),moved to Canada in 1862 as an employee of the HBC, it was at this time he chagned his name to "Phillips". William married Charlotte Lambert in 1866 at Fort Ellice and they had eleven kids. Their kids were Jack, Margaret married Joe Kirkness, Nellie married Charlie Eden, Jemima married Albert Settee, Catherine married Willie Taylor, Archibald married Katie Hourie, Annie married Malcolm McRae, Joseph, Alex or Tom, Christine married Perk Pearson. Isabel Kirkness Philp(b:1849) moved to Canada, I don't think she ever married. I'm trying to find out what happened to John and Margaret and the rest of the family? I have found out that Helen was living with her uncle and aunt in 1851. So something must have happened to her family. (John Philp's parents were: William Philp (b:1778) and Jean Folster(b:1780) and they were married in 1807) (Margaret Spence's parents were: William Spence and Hannah Mowat) William's parents were, George Philp(1749) and Catherine Taylor(1753) and they married 1775 So any information will be most welcomed. Hi, I am searching information about Thomas Tulloch. He is first mentioned 23 Jun 1775, when he moved in to Gothenburg Amiralitet parish in Gothenburg, Sweden. He married the year after, 23 Jan 1776 with Maria Christina Setterström. Thomas Tulloch is said to be born on 14 Nov 1748 or 1746 and came to Sweden from Edinburgh, Scotland. An old story says that Thomas Tulloch and a brother moved out from Edingburgh around 1773 sailing first to Asia before they settled for Sweden. Orkney or Shetland are also possible places for them, they introduced a special kind of boat used for fishing on these islands. The brother changed name in Sweden and I haven't been able to find him yet. Looking for all kind of information around these Tullochs. There are still quite many ancestors with the name Tullock around the area of Gothenburg, Sweden. regards JanYngwe Linderhav JanYngwe Linderhav <

For some years I have been researching the connection between General George Armstrong Custer [who was killed at the Battle of the Little Bighorn]and Orkney. You may be interested to read a short article I contributed to the Custer Association of Great Britain's web site [www.custer-association-gb.org.uk] under the title "He thought his ancestors came from Orkney." Currently, I am in the process of updating and improving this article for publication in CAGB's newsletter, The Crow's Nest, and would very much to hear from anyone who can supply me with information about the David Cursitor who is the subject of the following extract taken from THE ORCADIAN newspaper, December 1882. "Mr David Cursitor died at Portage la Prairie, Manatoba (sic). He was 55 years of age, and was an uncle to General Cursitor. David Cursitor was born in Rendall, Orkney, in 1827, and in 1844 went to British Columbia in the service of the Hudson's Bay Company, one of their trusted and highly respected officers, he remained there till 1859. He crossed the Rocky Mountains with a fortune and a band of horses and settled here [Portage la Prairie] to farm. He first kept a trading store, one the first in the area....". I would like to hear from anyone who has any information about David Cursitor, if the General referred to is George A Custer, if they have the full report of his obituary in the Portage la Prairie newspaper and/or details of his service with the Hudson's Bay Company. Thank you so much for this site. I was browsing and found you but did not include my email address. Imagine my delight when I saw a posting from a Peter Russell. I had lost touch with Peter several years ago. We had been corresponding re: our Russell family of Shapinsay. My husband's grandmother was a Jane Russell, b. 1850, who was the daughter of James Russell b. 1819 and his wife, Ann Hume. James and Ann left for Canada in 1851. Ann's parents--William Hume and Annie Loughton). James' father (1786)was married to Isabella Dinnison.(Isabella's parents--James Dinneson and Margaret Manson). The father of the James who married Isabella Dinneson was James Rusland (1750)and he was married to Geils Hepburn on Dec.9, 1779 in Shapinsay. Four children are recorded in the Parish register. James, baptized May 10, 1776. Marion, baptized Oct. 8, 1789, Margaret, baptized Feb. 17, 1793 and Magnus, born Sept. 17, 1795, died Feb. 28, 1801. According to the information I have, the ancient Orcadian surname of Rusland was anglicised to Russell durng the early years of the 19th century. Civil Records became compulsory Jan. 1st, 1855. At this time there were about 40 Russells living in Shapinsay. Bernadette Surgeson <
